- An eye for an eye: said to show that you believe if someone does something wrong, that person should be punished by having the same thing done to them: có ý nói nếu một người làm một chuyện gì đó xấu/sai trái thì phải nhận quả báo tương tự; ăn miếng trả miếng; thường đi chung là An eye for an eye (and a tooth for a tooth)
EX: I don’t believe in that kind of eye for an eye justice.
- As far as the eye can see/could see: for a long distance until something is so far away and small it cannot be seen any more; when you are about to state your opinion of a situation : diễn tả khoảng cách nhìn (xa) tới khi không thể nhìn được nữa; dùng ở đầu câu khi bạn đưa ra ý kiến riêng của bạn về một sự việc nào đó
EX:- The road stretched into the distance as far as the eye could see.
– As far as I can see, you’ve got an excellent chance of getting that job.
- Somebody’s eyes are bigger than their belly/stomach: something that you say when someone has taken more food than they can eat; to be greedy: khi nói về ai đó ăn nhiều hơn mức họ có thể; tham lam
EX: He took too much food, I think his eyes are bigger than his stomach.
- With the naked eye: without using any special device for making images larger: có thể nhìn bằng bằng mắt thường (không phải sử dụng kính hay bất kì thứ gì khác)
EX: We live miles away, but on a clear night, you can see the city skyscrapers with the naked eye.
- Not believe your eyes: to be very surprised: ý nghĩa sử dụng là rất ngạc nhiên (không tin vào những gì bạn thấy)
EX: I could not believe my eyes when I saw the garden in full bloom.
- See eye to eye (with somebody): If two people see eye to eye, they agree with each other: đồng tình, đồng ý với ý kiến hoặc là đồng quan điểm với ai đó
EX: My sisters don’t see eye to eye with me about the arrangements.
- Only have eyes for somebody: to be interested in or attracted to only one person: diễn tả sự yêu thích chỉ cho một ai đó/cái gì đó; trong mắt chỉ có ai đó
EX: You’ve no need to be jealous. I only have eyes for you.
- Keep your eyes peeled/skinned: to watch carefully for someone or something: trông chừng ai đó/cái gì đó thật cẩn thận; tập trung
EX: Keep your eyes peeled for Polly and Maisie.
- Out of/from the corner of your eye: If you see something out of/from the corner of your eye, you see it but not clearly because it happens to the side of you: sử dụng khi bạn thấy gì đó nhưng không rõ ràng vì nó xảy ra bên cạnh bạn
EX: I saw something move out of the corner of my eye.
- Before your very eyes: while you are watching: ngay trước mắt bạn/ khi bạn đang nhìn
EX: Then, before my very eyes, she disappeared.
