1.Although /though /while:.

Ví dụ:

Although/ though I agree with the proposal, I think it is better to increase pensions for those over 75 years of age.

Chúng ta có thể dùng “while” và “whereas” để so sánh để so sánh hai chủ thể và nhấn mạnh sự khác nhau giữa chúng.

Ví dụ:

While the home team was slow and clumsy, the away team was fast and precise.

2. Although/ Though…. may/ might …..

Ví dụ: Although/Though this idea may be sound, there are better ways to tackle the problem.

3. May/might …..but:

Ví dụ: This may be a very good way to improve the cohesion of society, but it must be done in conjunction with other measures.

4. Much as ( Although)

Ví dụ:

Much as I approve of the solution to the problem, I don’t believe it is the best way to deal with the situation.

5. Nevertheless/ nonetheless

Ví dụ: The policy is not popular with the general public. Nevertheless/ Nonetheless, it needs to be continued.

1. Increasing the capacity of the phone network is a good solution to the problem. It is not the only one. (although…may)
2. This is a sound argument. I think I’d want to see more funds made available for new carriages as well. (may…but)
3. The facilities available are endless. Inner city conditions are cramped. (while … may)
4. I don’t like the idea of computers controlling systems like transport. They perform a vital function. (Nevertheless)
5. I agree with the creation of high-speed communication systems. I can’t help thinking that they will lead to more demands on workers and hence more stress. (much as)
6. They are expensive to maintain and upgrade. Extensive metro systems exist in many major cities (may……. but)
7. I partly agree with the opinion expressed here. I think it is native to suggest that increasing the fares will in the end lead to a better transport service. (but)
8. It’s clear the quality of public services is improving. More needs to be done. ( Nonetheless)
